Getting Things Started
The Central Jersey Chapter of HWB was officially formed on May 20, 2024 and I went straight to work with our educational outreach. In July, I met with the Hamilton West High School’s garden club advisor, Mark Pienciak. We pulled weeds and selected a space in the current garden courtyard for a medicinal herb garden to teach the kids about plants that grow in our region.
As you see in the images to the right, the current garden has quite a few beautiful flower gardens, a koi pond, and an outdoor classroom area. I donated some plexi panels and they will be making upgrades to their current greenhouse, currently made with a wood frame and plastic.
One of the goals I have is to get approval for the garden club to be able to make an herbal signature mocktail for the senior prom. The students could make recipe cards for fellow students to be able to make their own. I’m thinking something with butterfly pea flower for teh color changing effect.
School starts in days, so we’ll have to get started ripping out the grass and planting herbs soon. I’ll post updates to this blog category, so stay tuned…
